Question about alergies and seizures

My American bulldog was at the vets for a wk stay,(kennel)in may, I told them to give him all his shots before he came home, including flea pill etc, he had a shot for kennel cough also, when I pkd him up, he wasn;t himself, almost to the point , he didn’t recognize me, he never was away from home before, on the way home he was almost himself again, then came the scratching,, I I went back to the vets 2 to 3 months in a row, thinkin fleas, got a flea pill, still scratching, so the vet seen him, and says allergies,, his eyes pink, his bottom, and around his mouth pink, also had little bumps on mouth, she gives him antibiotics, cephalexin 500 mg caps, 2 twice a day, it seemed to help at first, then came back, and she put him on another round, started to clear again, then it happened again, she recommends allergy test, at a hefty price I can’t afford right now,, so the other day, I think my dog had a seizure?? his head startd bouncing up and down continuously, for about 3 minutes, I talked to him to calm him,, and he;s been fine here for a couple of days, I guess I;m askin what u think?? money has been hard and don’t know what to do, he;s only gonna be 5 yrs old at the end of the month, I been cutting treats one at a time thinkin he might be allergic to them, but still scratches, not sure the antibiotics gonna work anymore, and he can’t pee when he;s on steroids, help???

Answer from Dr. Gaylord Brown:
From your description it sounds like there is an allergy component to your dog’s symptoms. The antibiotics are only helpful for secondary infection and will do nothing to treat the allergy itself. It is the allergy causing the itching and inflammation; the skin then becomes secondarily infected. For the allergy you are left with defining the allergy through testing and then giving allergy injections. Alternatively, you may treat the symptoms of the allergy with prednisolone or modified cyclosporine. Since you indicate there is a problem with the prednisolone, ask your veterinarian about the cyclosporine. Controlling allergies is difficult. Treatment, as opposed to cure, is the usual. You have a breed that is known to be highly allergic.
