Why do my dogs fight and how can I stop it?

About six months ago, I adopted two dogs from the pound. They get along very well. They play together all the time. They share a food bowl without incident. They share toys very well. About a month ago, my beagle was sitting on my lap. My black lab walked up to the chair and the beagle started growling. The lab attacked. They were fighting and growling and barking. I pulled them apart and kept them separated. Ten minutes later, I let them get together and they acted like nothing happened. This has happened about a dozen times. I don’t know what to do. I give them both tons of attention. I’m afraid they’re going to get hurt or that I will. Can you give me some advice?

Does the fighting always center on you? The incident you describe here is typical jealousy behavior. You need to avoid situations where one feels it is at the center of your attention and the other is encroaching on that. You need help from a behaviorist trainer or an injury may be in your future.
