Why did our 11 year old mixed breed dog develop a phobia about sounds and noises?

About a year ago our dog developed panic about noises. It started with panic about garbage grucks and has only gotten worse, to the point that he won’t go for his walks. Now we have to drive him to nearby dog parks and even then he is panicky about passing traffic sounds. We’ve tried natural anti-anxiety drops, trazodone and nothing has helped. What can we do?

As to why this happened auditory acuity changes with age. It is possible that your dog is unable to discern the differences between traffic sounds and this leads to anxiety and fear. Treatment to resolve this issue is difficult. A program to desensitize your dog will require a good animal behaviorist. Your local veterinarian may be able to help you find one in your area.
