Question about Ivy’s Kidney Disease

Dr. Brown,
I was reading the story on Ivy living with Kidney Disease for years and I was wondering what you did to keep him going. Minnew, my 14 year old, was diagnosed about 7 months ago. She gets fluids twice a week and we are keeping her thyroid high enough to keep her kidneys happy. She is also on Royal Canin RX food (and Solid Gold wet depending on her mood). She has her good and bad days. More good than bad. Any advice?

At the sanctuary our cats with impaired kidney function get subcutaneous fluid therapy twice a day. This is a technique that can be done in the home with instruction from your veterinarian. We also monitor their red blood cell count and give epogen as needed to prevent anemia. There are some inherent risks to this therapy that should be discussed with your regular veterinarian. However, many cats at D.E.L.T.A. have benefitted from epogen use through the years. We monitor thyroid levels and blood pressure and medicate as needed for these issues. Conventional dietary management is based on high quality but low quantities of protein in the diet. Unfortunately, some cats refuse to eat low protein foods. In such cases concentrate on high quality proteins since they must get adequate nutrition. Living in a low stress environment is crucial to success. Ivy is certainly a unique story and has done well through the years. Each animal’s response to therapy is different, but you never know how well they will do unless you try.
