Pink tooth

My dog hit his canine tooth on the side of the furniture, and the tooth turned a pinkish color. His vet/dentist will clean his teeth and remove the growth that he has on his gums. He said that the dog should have a tooth extraction for the pink tooth or have a root canal done. There is no issue with the tooth right now. Exactly how important is it for the tooth to be removed?

A dead tooth runs the risk of forming an abscess. However, I have seen such pink teeth remain for the remaining life of a dog and never cause a problem. I would be hard pressed to remove a tooth causing no pain or problems.
