My min. poodle, Brigitte is 15 years old and has two cataracts. I've had a recent physical on her. Her liver enzymes are high but otherwise she is ok. Is it safe to have the cataracts taken off?
a month ago my cat would put her paws in her water bowl after using the litter box, now she does in whenever she goes near the water bowl. it is as if she does not want any water in the bowl. but we have not seen her drinking the water. nothing has changed except her habit of playing in the water. we just had her to the vet a month ago for her yearly physical and shots, she seems healthly enough.
My Aussie had sterile nodual piniculitis and I bought the medicines online at Allivet. I got a shipment not too long before we had to put him to sleep. I don't want to throw away this life saving expensive medication. How/where can I donate for it to be put to use? Boxes are unopened and they have been kept in the refrigerator.
I try to provide a home for feline leukemia positive cats and currently have 4 males. I would like to enhance their immune function. Two are weak and being hand fed. Both had fevers of 104 brought down by antibiotics. One of them has anemia. They are currently taking lixotinic, DMG, echinacea, astragalus and lactated ringers orally. Do you have any recommendations?
My 11 yr old is in renal failure. BUN is 100. Besides the KD food (Science Diet) is it OK to give her fresh carrots and also can she still have her Greenie once in a while? Is there a homeopathic diet for this disease. She is in the advanced stage.
Hello, as I indicated my nearly 14 years old Chow Chow had a seizure for the first time ever on Monday,9/18/2017. My 30 years old son took her to "MedVet Emergency Center". She had another seizure in route to Vet and a third one at Vet. I was out of town and the Vet "would not begin treatment without payment for services rendered". So, my son called me back and I provided my credit card for payment of $337.62, for them to "put my dog on IV fluids and a load dose of phenobartital(?sp)".However, when I arrived back in town at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, I noticed no IV bag attached to the IV cathater and asked ,how long off? To my shock and dismayed, Dr. informed me she "had not been on IV fluids...had a fever of 104,...that's why on metal floor of kennel...no mat..." I insisted and requested IV fluid and pain medication Within less than 2 hours fever reduced to 102, my dog's breathing was visible and she blinked her eyes when I petted her. That Vet was clearly not caring and my plan was for stablization (fluids for severe dehydration, anti seizure medication so that I could transport my puppy to her regular doctor who cared about her. So, contacted her doctor and she made it through the night(blood work from noncaring Vet revealed blood cell counts "all normal, only way outside of normal range was indication of level of dehydration". Is there anything other than comfort care (continued IV fluids, anti-seizure medication and pain mefication, oh and "her glucose reading indicating very low", so that Rx)that can or should be done to reduce her discomfort? All that the non-caring Vet had her on before my arrival was "valium to calm her after third seizure when she arrived Monday". I am not asking about euthnasia like those individuals at non-caring Vet suggested. Something to reduce the torture and trauma from 18 hours of no fluids, 3 seizures. Regular Doctor is caring her now and she is not as comatose appearing as she was when I arrived yesterday at 6:00 pm.
I have an 8 year old British bulldog who about a year ago jumped off my bed and hurt her front shoulder. She's been to the vet many times and had anti inflammitories and will be ok for a few weeks then start limping again. They we're going to xray as a last resort as I'm on disability and just have no money. I myself have been bed ridden for 12 years with a nerve disease crps and unable to walk. Recently I started on cannabis oil and my pain is almost gone and I'm walking So I'm wondering if I can give her a drop and how often if I can?
No change in diet.vomits 3-4 times a day. Sometimes clear liquid or a bile color
My dogs gets diarrhea with commercial food, of any kind so I make her food out of proper proteins, fruits and vegetables. What is your opinion?

My spaded female 2.5 yo Lab/Pit mix likes to smell me and try to mount and hump me. She doesn't do this to anyone else. Why and how do I stop this behavior?
Doctor won't see her till next weekend. Meanwhile, her scores rise: ALT >1000, AST 212, and ALKP 1609. Ultrasound showed no tumors but adrenal gland on one side enlarged. Is it safe to let this go another week until they do more tests? The doctor thinks it's hormonal. Best food? Omega-3 okay? (I got some hemp seed oil for her and I have some flax seed, too).
He's smacks his mouth and lips all the time, even when there is water available. My husband brushes his teeth every couple of weeks now, but he is starting to get some tartar build-up. It seems like this just started over the last month though. Any ideas how what might be causing this, or how to take care of it? The smell is really nauseating and I feel badly, but I can't even stand to have him sit near me
Doctor, My l3 year old Shepherd-Vizsla mix, 75 lbs, had a calcium reading of 13, scale of 11 high normal, in 2014. Today, she has a calcium reading of 16. What could be the cause of this, and what can be done about it? Thank you.
My 10 year old Siamese had targeted radiation @ Univ of FL Sm Animal Hosp for her nasal lymphoma last fall. Repeat cat scans have shown no recurrence. We did only one chemo tx because at the time I thought it had made her sick AND I understood the incidence of metastasis to be 10-15%. Now,however, her 3 mo follow up showed 2 small masses, one in each lung, so she will need to resume chemo asap. I'm wondering if Frankincense & Cedarwood might help her.
IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO SURGERY
My 12 year old Welsh Corgi frequently gets "hot spots" on his abdomen and groin. He bites off the hair and licks it red and raw. I've tried treating it with corn starch or hyrodgen peroxide without success. The vet prescribes antibiotics and cortisone shots, but I don''t want to do that too often. Any home remedy suggestions?
Hello, my name is Dr Suzanne Gibson, and I recently hired as staff vet at Old Friends Senior Dog Rescue in TN. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on which software program you use to keep track of everyone? We have around 100 dogs in house and 200 in foster homes. I am also curious as to which distributors you use for vaccines, HW and Flea/Tick prevention. I was just hired and have a lot to do! Any advise you can provide me would be appreciated. Thank you so much!
He does it regularly. If i do t pick up right away he will eat it.
What medications and natural nutrients are safe for my westie. Her COPD is severe. She was near death from pneumonia in December.
I have a 15 year old Shepherd/Sheltie mix. She is in good health except for arthritis in her back, for which she get carprofen daily. About six months ago she developed a strong odor and started licking her back. At that time she also developed what looks like white flakes. After a bath, she smelled better for a short time and then started licking her sides and the flakes are again back. All this licking is causing her to ingest hair which leads to coughing. The vet doesn't know what might cause this problem.
She has been on the same food regimen for several years as well as the same meds - Synovicre and levothyroxine and Rimidyl. Any insight as to what might be causing this problem would be greatly appreciated as the smell some days is very strong. Thanks so much for your help.
I have a sweetheart of a Lab that is about 9 years old. Several weeks ago, she began to pant, and seem to have trouble breathing. She continually puts her nose up in the air and inhales sharply (wheezes) like she has something in her throat. It seems to come and go. On the first vet visit, she checked lungs, heart and gave her an allergy shot, it continued andon the second visit the vet partner gave her some Temaril, it does not seem to help, and she seems to be drooling some. Any ideas.'
My 6 yr old calico gets occassional diarrhea.. we believe from eating floral arrangements...it lasts several days usually...what can I give her or is there possibly another problem?'
The vet has recommended a $350 dollar procedure for one of our two shep mixes.
Dusty is one of 8 kittens from a stray we found (born March 4/2016) All his siblings and his Mother are very affectionate and loving but Dusty will not allow any petting other than the top of his head. He sleeps with me but I better not touch or I will get a nice bite. Sometimes he just jumps up and bites my hand or if I try to pet him he'll move away. I bleed easily so this is becoming serious What can I do Dr. Brown Please help!! Is their a Kitty Boot Camp LOL
Despite cleaning covered litter box 2x/daily & multiple rubberized litter mats around box, Coda (age 16) tracks litter under the dressers & bed. What can I do to keep the litter from
He has already had a series of blood tests and my vet cannot find anything wrong.
Your story about Audrea was wonderful and as I read about her kidney issue at such a young age I thought about my old girl, 18 now, that was diagnosed at the beginning of kidney failure about 5 years ago and has done remarkably well on a supplement, Renavast. Audrea's success story is the best ending and I just wanted to mention the Renavast if you weren't aware of its successes. Bless you and all the rescues.
They said yes, it was a fatty tumor but they never aspirated it to look at the cells and confirm. Should we ask that they do that. We are willing to pay for the lab test. We just want to make sure. If it is just a fatty tumor, will it go away if we are able to lower Aries weight by dieting (not having a lot of success on the diet but will continue to do so. He is a large medium dog who probably should weigh about 70 lbs max but he weighs about 100 lbs and as he is getting older we are worried about and want to get his weight down. We feed him Fromm Senior and Lower Activity dog food but I am afraid we are probably feeding him still too much especially since my husband is bad about sharing scraps from his meal. What would be the approximate cups of food he should get a day and is it better to feed him half in the morning and half in the evening. We have 3 other rescues but they are smaller and seem to be fine. Also if the tumor is just a fatty tumor would it still be better to have it removed or does it really matter? Thank you so much.
I wrote about my cat that has FIV and I have no place to isolate him. I have 3 other cats and all are indoor. Does your facility take these cats? If not, can you tell me who might?
10 yr. old cat...diabetic for about 3 1/2 yrs. when found as kitten..diagnosed with chronic nasal infection (1 nostril) was on Humilin U, but switched to PZI recently eats only Purina DM dry food indoor cat always past summer we had slight flea problem...he developed flea dermatitis..pulled out hair , scratched a lot...treated with Advantage for 4 months...hair's grown back but...still licks and pulls at hair..put on a antihistamine but made him too lethargic & has not helped
Presently, Zak is constantly eating and drinking a lot of water. He has really smelly, loose stools and is losing weight (from about 21 lbs. to 16 lbs now). He doesn't urinate a lot and seems to be a normal volume. He is still pulling his hair (although most has grown back). We regularly have his blood sugar tested and his frutosamine is within the normal range. We test his urine-normal ketones. He been on antibiotics and antihistamines.
Our vet thought he might be suffering with pancreatic insufficiency and put him on Viokase-V.... he won't eat his food with this on it...sprinkled it on his dry food and he nibbled just a little. We had pancreas blood test done...TLI came back negative but the PLI was 30.8. He is now on Metronidazole (1 tab. once a day..put on 2/22/06). We were told we could also give him acidophilus. He is not vomiting and may play a little at times. His weight went from 21 to 16 lbs.
Nothing seems to stop his diarrhea and his wasting away!\r\nHe seemed fine until switched to PZI-could this be the problem? He''s now licking the floor at times and still pulls at his fur. IS he in pain? Please help-his a great cat. Hope to hear from you soon.
My dog hit his canine tooth on the side of the furniture, and the tooth turned a pinkish color. His vet/dentist will clean his teeth and remove the growth that he has on his gums. He said that the dog should have a tooth extraction for the pink tooth or have a root canal done. There is no issue with the tooth right now. Exactly how important is it for the tooth to be removed?
My cat is too fat to wash her butt. So I take a damp paper towel and wash her butt off, (poop is stuck there) I do this twice a day. I noticed that tonight when I wash her butt and even touch her the tops of her hips she automatically licks her front legs. I stop washing her or even touching her back she stops licking. Now she wont even let me touch her lower back at all, even legs. She yells at me. She jumps around and runs just fine. This has gone on for 2 weeks, but now she wont let me clean her up at all. Before she waited for me to clean her butt. I am extremely gentle when I clean her butt. She is spayed too.

My 6 year old dog has had severe allergies during spring and summer times. She's alergic white oak trees and numerous other things that she is surronded by where we live.
Our vets are North Shore Animal League have tried numerous different medicines and even a steroid to help fight it, which all worked for a little while but now seem to have little to no effect. Not to mention the steroid changed my dogs personality completely, and we will never do that again. She was on Apoqul, Zrytec, a steriod (don't remember the name) and a few others I can't rememeber.
Any other suggestions to help fight her allergies to at least keep her comfortable during this time of the year, to the point where she isn't kicking and bitting herself non-stop.
