Our 4 1/2 year old Chocolate Lab has recently developed some seriously bad breath and dry mouth

He’s smacks his mouth and lips all the time, even when there is water available. My husband brushes his teeth every couple of weeks now, but he is starting to get some tartar build-up. It seems like this just started over the last month though. Any ideas how what might be causing this, or how to take care of it? The smell is really nauseating and I feel badly, but I can’t even stand to have him sit near me

A good oral exam by a veterinarian is appropriate. Some oral diseases that can cause this are abscessed teeth, tumors of the gum or throat, sinus infections, and foreign bodies either trapped around the teeth or embedded in the gum. Also there are some metabolic problems that can cause bad breath. Diabetes and kidney disease are just two of the problems that need to be ruled out
