I have a 5 yr old shitz tzu and the Vet suggested teeth cleaning

At his yearly check up last month, the vet suggested he be put to sleep to clean his teeth at a cost of $400.  I have tried the things for him to chew that is supposed to help with tartar but he will not chew any of them.  Is there anything else I can try?

There is a large array of home use products but if your dog refuses to chew anything most will not be useful to you. Brushing the teeth is a viable possibility. However, if there is already tartar present you will not be able to remove the tartar with brushing. I am empathetic with the cost of the procedure but the overall health of your dog will improve if you get his teeth cleaned.
