There are many causes of diarrhea in cats ranging from dietary indiscretion to cancer. A good history will generally reveal the dietary indiscretion. This can be treated with gastrointestinal antibiotics and a soft bland diet. Next is to rule out parasites and known pathogens that cause diarrhea. This can be done by sending a stool sample to the lab then treating for the offending agent. If the diarrhea has become a chronic problem ruling out dietary allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic pancreatitis, and cancer may be required. Each of these require special tests and imaging protocols. Diagnosing chronic diarrhea can require diligence and multiple treatment trials. If the problem is long standing consider consultation with a specialist.
