My question has to do with feline diabetes. My 7 year old male probably got diabetes from being overweight. At one point he was 22 pounds and now is down to 17 pounds. Getting him regulated continues to be a problem. He was diagnosed in December of 2015 and is on his third type of insulin now, Lantus (glargine), which has the most flat curves. I have kept a detailed glucose log for him, indicating dates, times, glucometer readings, insulin units given, and what food he was given, and type it into a Word table weekly from the written notebook which I email to my vets. I do a 12 hour curves on him every weekend. He goes to 3 different vets, a holistic one, a traditional one, and a university veterinary hospital for an internal medicine specialist. I've had to do a lot of research myself on feline diabetes and found the German protocol was the only one that actually lists a dosing protocol for Lantus. A dosing protocol for glargine is what I need, but none of my vets will agree to the German one or give me a US one. Lantus drug sheets from the pharmacy do not go into dosing at all, and only talk about humans taking it. I didn't agree with the internal medicine intern or resident who suggested prescription dry food. All the articles I read say feed only canned food, no dry, which is what I've been doing. The traditional vet is the one prescribing and dosing the glargine, and one day his glucose went very low and I had to feed him extra food and not give him any insulin and then he seems to go into smogoyi effect. After reading the German protocol, I believe the traditional vet had him going up too fast, about a unit per week, which might be OK for Prozinc, but not for Lantus. The German protocol would only recommend going up by 1/4 or 1/2 a unit, but they say you can do it in 5 days time. The internal medicine vet wanted 10 days or more per dose before raising the dose. This time I waited nearly 3 weeks to raise his dose by a half unit since the numbers of his last curve were mainly in the upper 300's. His glucose dropped to 45. I didn't give him any insulin that evening and called the vet first thing in the morning (by then his glucose was over 535) and we went back to his old dose. There are 2 other possible reasons for the drop besides raising his dose. I was at the bottom of the vial of Lantus. I read that Lantus shouldn't be rolled or disturbed much and is a clear liquid that doesn't seem to settle like the Prozinc and Novolin N did. Perhaps the Lantus in that vial did settle and was more concentrated at the bottom. I did look on lantus.com website to find instructions for humans with the vial, not the Solostar pen, and it doesn't say to roll it. The other thing that might have affected him is that my holistic vet started him on Standard Process Feline Whole Body Support supplement. She had me wean him up from 1/4 pill once a day for a week, 1/4 pill twice a day for a week, 1/2 pill twice a day for a week, and just this past weekend I started giving him a whole pill twice a day, which is the standard dose for a cat. Could the Standard Process Whole Body Support be causing him to get better and not need as much insulin? They need to notify you on the bottle somewhere if that is the case. So I'm going back to the 1/2 pill twice a day on that one and have tried calling them for information but haven't received a call back yet. I am thinking about calling the FDA to inquire what they know about dosing Lantus in a cat and about Standard Process Feline Whole Body Support in a diabetic cat. I can email you the entire glucose log for my cat if you let me know how to get it to you since I can't attach a file in Delta's Ask the Vet. It is 51 pages long so far.

My dogs hair has been thinning and he has a yellowish crust like skin, his hair has gotten brittle feeling, and he's starting to thin out on his back? I've had him tested for cushings disease cancer, thyroid issues? Everything came back normal. He is a 11 year old chihuahua. I've tried coconut oil before baths, medicated shampoos, oil and vitamins in his food. Can this be food related? He is not the best eater but I do give him gourmet treats like apple smoked dog sausage, sweet potato wrapped in duck. Lately I've been feeding him eggs to improve his coat. My vet has run out of ideas...

My wonderful 8 year old dog became lethargic and was wheezing. To our shock, he was in congestive heart failure. He was diagnosed with cardio myopathy. The immediate crisis has passed for now but the key is to get his fractional contractions higher (I was told 35% is normal, he is hovering around 15%). The problem is, when we put him on digoxin, his numbers went up but he refused to eat--- for a week! We took him off digoxin and he began eating his numbers dropped from 18-14%. We've started him on digoxin again but I'm afraid he'll stop eating. Sometimes the only thing that he'll eat is a small can of cat food. Is it harmful to give a dog (and he''s a big dog) cat food... or is better to get something in his stomach rather than nothing at all? I'm so worried that in trying to help him, I may be harming him.

He Needs hemp oil to stimulate appetite. Where can I get this? I have been taking him to reg and holistic vets and the holistic vet gives him Hemp RX oil but I have to take him each time and it is expensive just to get the oil. The cyproheptadine from the reg vet makes him very anxious, 1/4 pill, so I stopped it. He does take theophyline for asthma. I rather give him the oil. Can I buy a trustworthy one from the internet?

We bought in a new cat which gave her fleas(meds were not on long enough before we bough in her) Now her red blood cells are high. FIV cat now her red cells are near normal with antibotics and predizone but now he said her white cells are low and give the pretizone to her. She is now having seizures or involuntary muscles movements. We stopped the meds today all three of them. Can Enrofloxacin 22mg , Cyproheptadine 4mg, Prednisolone 15mg cause seizures? I need help! It was just today she started not walking right, legs and tail moving oddly without reason, by it self,-involuntary muscles movements. She is eating and using litter. I am so scared to use the vet again!

I have had sample of her feces tested and she needed worming. She eats Sportmix wholesome chicken and rice daily. She has to have veterinarian prescription drugs that stop the diarhea for several weeks and then it comes back. Would a grain free food take care of this? She takes NexGuard and HeartGuard monthly as well.

My chow/ border collie mix 13 year old started not eating, drinking a lot and urinating way less than she should. She had suffered from bladder stones, had surgery twice and won a battle with pancreatitis. He did tests and said she was in kidney failure and she would deteriorate very quickly, said her numbers were very bad. We sadly decided to put her to sleep. I had never been through this. I have since did some research. My vet only used one injection into the vein. I now know he could have given her a shot to sedate her first. Do you think she suffered any? She didn't seem to have any pain, I was with her, holding her.

It started as a seasonal allergy (where he was prescribed a 1/4 to 1/2 of anti-histamine a day).  In April, he was fine and his blood work was good.  Then, he started having phlegm in May & nasal discharge in June.  Moreover, for the last 3 weeks, he's so dried up though we've been giving him the 200 ml of fluids daily.  Last week, his regular Vet prescribed prednisone for 5 days & it dried up his nose, however, his body is still dried up & dehydrated ~ when you pull on his skin there is no looseness at all.  He loves sitting & sleeping next to the vaporizer but it gets too hot that our other cats (almost 19 & 14 years old) got lethargic.  How will you suggest to keep our 16 1/2 year old Manx cat to stay hydrated besides getting the daily fluids?

He had approx 5 teeth removed with laser. Recently he will not let you touch the outside bottom of his jaw. I was able to get a finger in his mouth to feel around and I felt a sharp either bone or tooth. Could this have been missed during his oral surgery and causing him the discomfort? I've also had to change his dog food due to allergies; scratching biting paws and tail, dry scaly skin. He was on Pro Plan Bright Mind Adult 7+ Chicken for about 8 months. Did show great mental response to it, but still had allergy issues. Recently started him on Blue Basics Grain-free Salmon & Potato mixed with couple teaspoons canned same formula & Licks anti-inflammatory. Seems to be doing well with it as far as allergy issues. Had couple loose stools. Think might be due to canned food. He was very restless last night and I think it's due to the mouth issue. Hope all this info helps you with you expertise advise. Thank you. Kim

Then as the scales come off so does the hair. Can I apply hemp oil on these spots to help heal them? I'm wondering if it is eczema in dogs that is causing this. He sheds unmercifully but is active and eats his food. He has stopped taking walks..absolutely refuses to go. We have a lot of stress in our house this past month as my husband developed cancer and then had a stroke. We have a lot of dr. appointments and treatments to go to so Dudley is home a lone more often. However, he did have these spots before but not this bad

Rowdy is approximately 14 years old; has been with me 13. About 2 years ago, he began losing weight. He's short-haired, probably Labrador mix. He was weighing 60-65 lbs. but is probably closer to 55 now. He's been wormed annually in June. He gets immunization shots (5-1) and rabies shots. He lives on 1-acre with me, 2 horses, 3 chihuahuas, a pit bull, a shepherd mix and a Catahoula Cur, none of whom are off the property except for rabies shots or injuries. Although he has maintained his appetite, there's no "meat" on his bones. He has lost strength in his hindquarters, although he is still able to rise, lope off and "hold his own" among the other dogs. He gets 1 or 2 cans of Purina Pro Plan dog food each morning and I'm experimenting with high-calorie supplements. His urination and bowel movements are regular and he does not drink an extraordinary amount of water (admittedly, he is not observed every minute of the day and has free access to both dry kibble and water). Other than a veterinarian's exam, can I do anything else to promote healthy weight gain?

My 13 1/2 year old cat just had his spleen removed with a benign growth on it. He has a smashed pelvis from being hit by car 13 years ago before i found him and his one kidney is in his belly. In april his regular vet dismissed the lump in his belly as his kidney so i went for second opinion and voila. Nick has been on depo medrol every two months. What do i need to do for him- without his spleen. His 18 year old brother has a bad heart and a lung tumor so having two sick elderly cats is hard. 2nd vet has said nothing about special food, meds, life expectancy etc. What should i be looking for??? They are my heart and soul and i will probably lose the 18 year old this year. Nick is about 7.5 pounds, eating well and drinking but i am worried and scared.

High density neighborhood, owner moved leaving their outdoor huge elder, stud cat starving, injured, near death, a skeleton. Cannot pick him up due to his injuries and last of trust. brought him to better health .. almost frisky. Loves being brushed, a bit testy. Has a healing left wrist break, which he re injured ,upper one pancaked to the side of the lower break, in great pain, lost all the progress made. Have put Arnica pellets (6) in each feeding, condensed milk, and Purina cat chow. White flakes when I brush him, dry hair with quite a bit of white mixed in, abdomen is tinier than my 9" wrist. Does not eat birds so dependent on us. Too smart for traps. Some one's good pet suffering's in his last days. My overly territorial house rabbit prevents him entrance from the elements ... Ideas?

I have a husky and 2 other small dogs they all went over the neighbors and her dog was killed no one saw anything but my husky got blamed for it. I had to give him up because the cost to keeping him was too much I had to have within 3 days it was impossible. They said they would try to find a rescue to take him. Is there anyway a rescue would be able to help me out to get him back. He is a great dog and it hurts to have to let him go.
