Q: Why is it important that the ingredients in your pet food be animal by-product or "rendered pet-free"?
A: It has been a common practice in the livestock, poultry and fish farm industry to use an "animal protein" as a feed supplement for beef, dairy cattle, poultry, pigs and farm raised fish and shrimp. This animal protein is derived through a process called “animal rendering.” This gruesome practice involves taking the bodies of euthanized pets from vets and animal shelters, road kill and dead livestock (including horses,) and cooking their bodies to produce several products: yellow grease, tallow, and “animal protein.”
Worse yet, many of these rendered animals were either sick or diseased at the time of their deaths and their bodies are decomposing before the rendering begins. We believe therefore that the diseases they had when they were living (such as cancer), the chemicals used to treat them if they were sick, the toxins that built up in the their bodies after they died and the phenobarbital used to euthanize them may not break down completely in the rendering process.
It is our opinion that there are significant health risks that come from eating animals that have been fed these "rendered products" or from eating any food that is made using animal by-products. And ethically, we can not support a practice that disregards the dignity, even in death, these precious animals are entitled too.
We love our animals, we want to keep them healthy and safe. That is why we will never feed them any food that may contain these rendered by products. All of the ingredients in our food, including our human grade Bison meat, are verified "rendered pet free”.
We wish that our dogs could be vegetarians but all of our research and experience suggests that dogs and cats cannot thrive on a diet without meat protein—and soy has proven to be a significant food allergen for our animals. Our only option is to ensure that our meat source is humanly raised and fed a "clean food,” like grass, corn or other unmodified pure grains. Our Bison is raised on the range, grass and corn fed, and certified growth hormone and antibiotic free. Our fish are "middle swimming" ocean fish and therefore the cleanest fish in the sea.
