I have a question about…coughing and gagging
I rescued a 12 year old female part poodle part bichon. Organization gave me blood test all in normal range and said they had trachea xrayd’ and just called it kennel cough. She coughs during the night and day, laying down or walking around, and she doesn’t throw up anything but a small amount of saliva. It doesn’t seem to matter what I feed her , wet, dry, different brands etc. I am a widow and just lost my 18 year old poodle in Aug and couldn’t stand not having a companion. We are getting along fine, and this started out as a foster, but have I just got myself into a similar situation as one of your questions in the respiratory section, can’t be diagnosed, and spend $1,000′s at the vet and still not know? There are receipes online to make at home but she won’t drink it or eat it if I cover it up with peanut butter. Any suggestions? Thank you for all your work there at DELTA. I am a donator, every month if I can, for years.
Heavy breathing of dog during relaxation
Dr Brown, my 12 year old Shep/Rotti mix has been panting and breathing heavy when laying on the couch with me or when we are in bed. He wakes up at night and gets very restless and starts open mouth breathing like he just got done running a race. The whole bed shakes-he is 100lbs. This has been happening for about 4 months straight. He is afraid of thunderstorms and has breathed like that during them since a baby but this is happening at any time and every night.
I have a question about…coughing/gagging in 10 week old puppy
My 10 week old cavachon puppy freq coughs/gags (I don’t know which). I have had him to the vet for his puppy check up and he told me he was fine.He doesn’t do this at any specific time. he is eating well, gaining weight, running around and doing regular puppy stuff. Should I be concerned? And what might this be?
walking my dog in the heat.
Hi Dr. Brown.
I have a 9 year old chocolate lab named Molly. She loves going for walks, but sometimes it is 28-30 degrees Celsius outside, and when you add in the humidex, it feels like 37+ celsius. She makes it fine during the walk, but it sometimes takes her 2-3 hours to totally cool down. She just pants. Is this okay?
Thanks,

Dalmatian coughing like she has “croup”
I have a 7-8 year old Dalmatian that I rescued from a shelter. She was adopted by another couple prior to my adopting her and was returned to the shelter because she kept vomiting. Now, over a year later after adopting her, and about $1000.00 in vet bills, I am no closer to finding out WHAT is causing these symptoms: coughing like she has “croup”; she begins to gag like she’s about the vomit and most of the time she stops and sometimes she actually vomits. I talked with my vets office today and excoriated them for not giving me a diagnosis for all the money I have paid them. They are a top veterinarian practice in our area, but have not adequately answered the WHAT is causing this question. I was most recently told maybe i would have to take her to see a “specialist”, costing me a ton of more money.
My question is” have you ever encountered this is any of the dogs at DELTA, and if so, were you able to ascertain the cause, and if so, how did you get he/she back into good health?
The vet took an xray of her entire torso including her abdominal area, did entire blood workup and “organ functions” (for lack of proper terminology). They performed a transtracheal wash and put her on Cipro.
She eats Fromm Family dog dry food and Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover soft food. I am beside myself wanting an explanation for what ails her. She has had this for way over a year, at least. I hope you can help.
