Should I get a 5.5 month old kitten when I have an 8 year old cat already

I have an 8 year old female cat named Mittens who is very timid around humans other than myself. I got her from the Edmonton Humane Society November of 2003. On her infomation sheet it stated that she was fine with cats and dogs and not fine with men and children. It has been just Mittens and myself for almost 7 years and she is very attached to me. The only contact she has had with other cats since I got her was twice I have placed her in a cat kennel (when I went on vacation) where she hasn’t interacted with any of the other cats there. She would find a spot she liked and just watch the other cats. Does this suggest to you that she would be happier as an only cat? There is a 5.5 month old male kitten I am interested in. He is being fostered thru a rescue organization. On his, Leroy’s, information sheet it states that “he is friendly and gentle and some of the time he feels a bit playful but he likes to play very gently and would rather snuggle with someone. He loves to be petted”. Mittens also likes to be near me and be petted. So I am worried that if I bring in Leroy Mittens might become upset/jealous and no longer be a happy cat. Do you think it would be beneficial to Mittens if I brought in a kitten?

There is no way to predict how your cat will react. However, you should puruse some of the other cat questions on this site regarding cats exhibiting inappropriate behavior due to an anxiety situation. That being said, when we introduce a new cat into an existing group we always place that cat in a condo where interaction can take place through the bars without direct contact. During this time you would need to reassure Mittens she was not being replaced. This process takes a few days then introduce the two cats. Do not allow Leroy to overpower Mittens.
