Pinworms and dogs?

I have heard conflicting information about this and I would like to know if dogs can get pinworms and if they can transmit them to other family members. Thank you.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

Dogs do not get pinworms. Dogs cannot pass pinworms to humans. Horses, humans, and rabbits get pinworms. However, each species has its own specific pinworm. In other words, the pinworm from a horse cannot infect a human. The confusion my come from the tapeworm. These can look similar to pinworms when segments leave the anus and lead to the confusion.
