Night blindness

My chihuahua is 11 yrs. old and has recently developed what I believe is night blindness. She’s been crying out if she is upstairs in the dark even if the door is open. She has run into a table leg that was put out for extra company when the lights were low. Does this sound like any particular eye problem or is she just getting older? I don’t notice any problem during the day.

One Response to “Night blindness”

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

This is an eye problem most likely related to age. As a dog gets older their lenses undergo a hardening process called sclerosis of the lens. This process leads to an opacity to develop in the lens. This allows less light to be able to penetrate the lens, so night vision is poor. Please have your veterinarian to examine your pet to confirm this condition.
