My hound mix doesn’t like to be around humans she doesn’t know

About a year ago I adopted a hound mix from the local SPCA. I was told at the time they believed she was an abused dog. Most of the time when I take my dog on walks she’ll bark at anyone that approaches use, and she’ll nip at people she doesn’t know that enters my house. Is there anything I can do to cure this?
