Get a toothpaste made especially for dogs. These have an enzymatic action and do not need to be rinsed from the mouth. Human toothpaste may cause nausea if swallowed. Start by placing a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and apply it to the teeth. Initially, only be concerned about the cheek side of the teeth. After doing this for a few days, your dog will be accustomed to you working in his mouth. Always praise the pet after each session. Then use a dog specific toothbrush instead of your finger. Initially, only apply the toothpaste with the brush, don’t worry about active brushing. After the dog is used to this activity, start agitating the brush a little more. Most tartar builds up on the outside of the teeth, so concentrate on the outside of the teeth. After your dog is used to you brushing, you can start brushing inside and the chewing surfaces. Remember to always praise your pet and give a dental treat, available at most pet stores, after each session.
