Dear Dr. Brown,
My name is Alexandra, I have a beautiful mixed breed, 13 year old Pitbull/boxer, female dog named Bibi. About three weeks ago, we almost lost her after she collapsed, was almost unconscious, and couldnt walk. We rushed her to an Emergency Vet facility in our area; where they did tests and also did IV on her. The test results confirmed she had a low red blood cell count of 25%, the following day they did other blood work and her blood count was dropping was at about 20%. A day later we decided to do a blood transfussion on her because she was very weak, and did help. The first emergency place that saw her thought my beautiful dog had the autoimmune disease that kills red blood cells IMHA, so they prescribed her Predisone, and other meds to treat it. Then after two days we noticed that she started to get brusinng all over her stomach, we previously noticed a small quarter sized bruising under her armpit, then 2 days later her whole abdomen was bruised, very dark purple, and we thought it was probably blood and that she was bleeding internally. At that point, we called the emergency vets who saw her and told them about the bruising, and they said they could no longer assist her and told us to contact a specialist in our area, which we did. When we took her to the specialist, they did blood work again which confirmed she was at 22%, and additionally they did an ultrasound on her stomach to see if there were any pecularities. After the exams and ultrasound, the Vet found a mass in her stomach, and unfortunately gave us the diagnosis that my beatiful dog, Bibi, has hemangiosarcoma; we were completely plummetted at the very terrible news. At this moment, our baby is fighting this cancer, the bruising on her stomach has almost cleared up, except now she has some bruising near the groin area, and out of nowhere now, she has developed and grew a bump/hump about the size of a tennis ball on her shoulder, and now her foot is swollen!!!!!!!! and we/I are desperate, as I have been trying to find the Hemp oil to help her with this cancer, and any other natural remedies that may assist her. I and my best friend Bibi need help!!!! please help!!!! please!!!! we dont know what to do!!!
Answer from Dr. Gaylord Brown:
I am so sorry for Bibi. Certainly we use Hemp Oil as an adjuvant therapy for all of our cancers, but you would need more aggressive treatment for this devastating disease. I would recommend surgery to determine if the spleen is the sole organ involved; if so removal would be possible. If ultrasound has determined that there are multiple organs involved then chemotherapy should be instituted. We use adriamycin and cytoxan for this cancer. In cases where surgery cannot remove the primary source longevity is unfortunately short.
