My aging chihuahua has cut her eating in half

My 11 yr. old chihuahua isn’t eating much. She weighs around 5 lbs. now but was 6.4 lbs. She seems to have some sinus trouble as she will breathe out of her mouth quite a bit. No runny nose. As I’m writing this I believe she’ll need to be seen by her vet, but could you tell me if you think there could be a connection between her not smelling as well and her eating issues?

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

Definitely, the sense of smell is important to a good appetite. Bad teeth can lead to a nasal infection or she may have developed a tumor in the nasal cavity. A thorough exam is needed.
