My 9 yr old mixed breed dog just diagnosed with mast cell tumor
Hello Dr. Brown,
My dog just recently started seeing a pet dermatologist, referred by our primary care vet due to chronic skin lesions and infections, who discovered a mast cell tumor on my dogs chest. He said all that can be done is cut tissue away until we get a result back from pathology that “the edges are clean”. He is on antibiotics from a staph infection related to his skin condition, along with pain pills, benadryl, pepcid and increasing his dosage of fish oil and glucosamin chondroitin supplements since his surgery to remove the mass. I have heard from numerous pet owners how switching their dog/cat to a raw diet made all the difference in the world as far as energy level, coat improvement and increasing life span for those pets given not given much longer to live, especially cancer treated dogs. What are your thoughts on raw diets? He has been on a grain free diet for over a year now. Thank you very much from myself and Sam the dog.

The best treatment for mast cell tumors is wide surgical excision. However, there are chemotherapy drugs available if excision is not practical. My own personal experience with raw dog foods was not that good. This was especially true with older, debilitated patients.
