My 4 month old cocker spaniel who pants heavily and is very much tachycardic

My puppy started panting just a month ago. She pants heavily even after a long rest. Whenever I take her out to play she always had a hard time catching her breath and usually lies down right on the ground, that was my cue to get her to a local vet and said she has a respiratory infection, she prescribed Cephalexin, Prednisone and Essentiale and after a week of comlying it, the panting is still there. Please answer, I’m very much worried.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

If the condition is not improving with treatment you need to look into the situation more deeply. The simplest things should be ruled out first. Was the puppy dewormed? A heavy parasite load can manifest as a respiratory problem. Are you in a heartworm area? You mention the panting, tachycardia, and exercise intolerance but no actual cough. This may be a congenital heart problem. You definitely need to have more testing done on your puppy.
