Mastiff was diagnosed with stones in his bladder (struvites)

My 4 year old Mastiff was diagnosed with stones in his bladder (struvites) and is on an expensive and unpleasant smelling prescription canned dog food. Is there anything I can prepare for him at home that would address his needs, or perhaps a canned food that does not smell so bad? He is currently on Royal Canin Urinary SO. Thanks.

    Linda,
There is a company (Hills) based in the US that makes a leading struvite dissolution diet who has a recipe available for a homemade diet through veterinarians. If your veterinarian does not have it, call others. Incidentally, our experience at DELTA with these diets is not that good. With male dogs there is a danger that the stones can get smaller but not small enough to pass. These stones then cause an obstruction and the dog cannot urinate at all! It may be wise to seek a second opinion regarding surgical options.
