lick granulomas..
I have a 9 year old altered white GSD who has developed a lick granuloma on a front leg. It is currently covered with a telfa pad held in place with a wrapping of gauze, all covered with vet wrap. I tried using triple abx ointment, with little improvement. I am now omitting the abx and wrapping dry. A friend suggested using cornstarch on the area. What’s the best thing to do? He leaves the dressing alone and it stays in place. I have been changing it at least daily, more if it is required.
Thanks.

If your dog is leaving a dressing alone, the lesion may not be a lick granuloma! A sign of lick granulomas is the dog will not leave the lesion alone, even with a wrap. They will tear it off and lick the wound or lick the bandage until it is wet. So I would like confirmation of the diagnosis. At the Sanctuary we try to leave these open to the air. We apply an anti-perspirant topically to dry the lesion and spray a repellant spray afterwards to discourage licking. We use amitriptylline, an anti-anxiety drug, to treat the obsessive nature of this problem. Usually there is a low grade pyoderma involved, so we also put the patient on oral antibiotics for up to 4 weeks. Many of these dogs respond to a change in environment, such as a new location or a new roommate.
