I have a question about Yorkie scratching muzzle.

I have a 5 yr.old Yorkie that scratches his muzzle on both sides near the whiskers area until it bleeds. It seems for no apparent reason or when extremely excited that he behaves this way.My wife treats the wound daily with Dermacool and Calm coat, just seems to help temporarily. The Vet prescribed Dermacool and Fluoxetine. We stopped giving him Fluoxetine it made him very lethargic. We tried diet changes and settled on a Pacific salmon dry dog food diet. His belly also has a rash and red spots,we are at wits end please help!

Though exacerbated by anxiety, the involvement of a rash on the abdomen leads me to believe an allergy is the root of the problem. At the sanctuary these types of dogs are tested by Heska lab to determine what they are allergic to. Then a serum is developed to give injections to reduce their sensitivity. In addition we use a hypoallergenic diet, which you are doing already, use prednisone and antihistamines as needed, bathe regularly in medicated shampoo, and use antibiotics when there is an exacerbation. These animals are never cured! They need treatment to stay under control. For the anxiety, try amitriptylline as it may not cause as much drowsiness.
