I have a question about…wound care

A couple of my dogs got into a scrap and one took a bite to a front leg, a puncture to the front and a superficial rip to the back (just above the “wrist”). The wounds themselves are healing (happened 4 days ago), but there’s persistent swelling below the wounds. What can I do to reduce the swelling?

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

Wounds such as these always warrant antibiotic treatment. The swelling could indicate a subcutaneous infection. At this point, soak the foot in warm epsom salt solution for 5 minutes twice daily and consult your regular veterinarian for a prescription of antibiotics.
