I have a question about… Vestibular Syndrome

Our 14 y/o German Wirehaired Pointer was diagnosed with Vestibular Syndrome last yr. Prior to the sudden onset of this, she was chugging right along, walking 1/4 mile once or twice daily, good appetite etc. Our vet recommended putting her to sleep but my husband wouldn’t hear of it. We did intensive supportive care until her back legs began to work again. That took close to 2 months. The symptoms of her eyes darting side to side and her tongue not working properly cleared up within 8 days. By all appearances she totally recovered. Until last night when all of the symptoms came back. Is it normally seen that this syndrome returns? Our vet had told us that since she recovered that she would not ever have this again. Since she recovered completely the last time does that mean that she is likely to do so again? Your thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.
