I have a question about…shepard’s lame leg

Hello Dr.
My 15 yr old shepard mix has started dragging his back right leg, actually stepping on the paw instead of the pad. He is usually ok in the a.m. then quickly degenerates throughout the day. He’s uncomfortable but doesn’t cry. He has also started to loose his appetite so we now feed him tuna with a bit of kibble which he does eat happily. Is this just old age or a sign it might be time to say good-bye? Is baby asprin safe to give him to help with his discomfort? Thank you for sharing your wisdom in helping me care for my son.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

The orthopedic situation may be arthritis of the spine or a degenerative nerve disease. Treatment with prednisone may help dramatically. Baby aspirin is probably not effective at this point. There are other drugs that would probably help; such as rimadyl or deramax. Please have your pet checked out to see if drug therapy will help.
