I have a question about people who might adopt dog requiring Atopia for life…

I have a very expensive GSD who is 2 years old. He has dealt with fistulas, allergies and is now on skin meds Atopia, and 2 other prescriptions. We will learn if my husband is allergic to him in a few days. I don’t know if there would be anyone to adopt him in this condition. In your experience, what does it cost to treat this skin condition long term, and the threat of fistulas again?

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

Fistulas have a tendency to reoccur. The Atopica medication may reduce the probability of the fistulas coming back. Realistically, there is a 50% chance your pet will deal with these again in his lifetime. The cost of treatment will be determined by the maintenance dose of Atopica your pet will require. the medication is expensive. Online pharmacies may be your best choice for keeping expense down. There are breed specific rescues which may help you place your pet. an internet search for such a rescue in your area may be helpful. Taking on a pet is a lifelong commitment!
