I have a question about kidney/urinary problems & cancer.

My 19 yr. old cat was urinating everywhere (was some blood) a couple of mos. ago. My vet ran tests and said the results indicated a urinary tract infection. He put her antibiotics for two months, and the urination problem got better, but still hasn’t completely stopped. After the second round of antibiotics, I stopped giving them to my cat because I’ve always heard that it could be dangerous to extend antibiotics for long periods of time. She is now also having some constipation problems.

The vet told me that my cat’s kidneys are not good, and that she also has cancer of the spleen (did CRT scan). I chose not to opt for a biopsy/radiation and put my cat through all of that. They only thing the vet suggested is feeding my cat a kidney cat food and mix cranberry poweder into it.

I have been looking onlilne at various herbs to help my cat’s urinary and constipation problems, as well as products for her overall health and kidney problem.

What would you suggest?

Thank you.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

I agree with the cranberry suggestion. The constipation may be helped with pumpkin mixed in the food. There are also fiber capsules available called vetasyl and there is a laxative gel that can be giving orally called laxatone. Urinary acidifiers may also help the urinary problem. Long term antibiotics would not hurt in this situation.
