I have a question about “inverted sneezes”

Enter your question here: I have a 4y.o. 10 lb. rescued mixed male dog, Munchkin. A DNA test shows he is part Lhasa Apso, Chihuahua, Cocker Spaniel, Pekingese, Poodle and Weimaraner. He has these attacks which my Vet calls “inverted sneezes” usually after drnking water, becoming excited or for some unexplained reasons. They can be scary and sometimes seem to last for a long time. Is there anything I can do to help him through one of these episodes? I’ve been told to lightly rub his neck or blow gently on his face. This only helps him sometimes to break the cycle. Is there anything else I can do to get him over one of these occurences? I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

This problem, also known as a reverse sneeze, sounds dramatic but is harmless. This can occur in all breeds but is more common in small, short snouted, dogs. It is believed post nasal drip plays a role at times. Antihistamines may reduce the signs in this type of inverted sneeze. When it occurs when drinking water it may be related to water getting on the soft palate. In that situation, a surgical procedure to shorten the soft palate may help.
