I have a question about…Giardia in dogs

I adopted a puppy 4mos old about 3 weeks ago. Made and appt for boosters and the tech happened to mention having a fecal sample sent in just in case. She came back positive for Giardia but has no symptoms. The vet put her on metronidazole which I noticed was your recommended treatment. Is there anyway of knowing how long she has been infected to help prevent reinfection? I have had her 3 weeks. She was in the shelter 3-5days brought in as a stray injured. I noticed humans usually show signs 1 to 3 weeks after infection with cysts. Is there similar guidelines for dogs?

I am also confused as to if she can actually be cured or if it just goes dormant or wipe out enough of the cysts to not cause as many issues?

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

It is likely your puppy came to you with the giardia. The puppy’s immune system was keeping the organism at bay, but unable to eliminate the infection completely. Treatment will eradicate the problem.
