The best preventative is dietary management. Foods low in magnesium, mangenese, and that impart a slight acidity to the urine are best for this condition. Purina and Hill’s both make prescription foods to help prevent this disorder. For cats prone to this disorder, frequent monitoring for urinary tract infections is also helpful to prevent a relapse. At the sanctuary, these cases are extremely rare. We use Blue Diamond cat food.
