feeding home cooked meals for my 10 yr. lab
I am feeding my dog white fish and chicken both cooked in water with potatoes or uncle Bens white rice 1/4 cup green beans and carrots three times a day. I give her about one chicken breast or three small filets a day I ran out of omega 3 fish oil and will substitute it with a dry omega 3 from the vet. Some times I add olive oil 1 tsp a day but I really dont know how much quantity to give her. I have read so many conflicting stuff on the internet. I am confused. The online pet meds asks for 250. to give a formula, kind of a high cost for me. Reason for this home cooked diet she developed colon problems about a year ago slimy poop with blood in it diarea and BAD GAS problem started after I gave her antibiotics for a swolen leg gland from a cut in her paw and 4 days after the poop problem started from the antibiotics she ate a scowering pad like S.O.S. She has had anal gland problems needs to have them internally expressed and she has arhritis. I had her blood tested xrays and poop analyzed and the vet said the blood was normal. Prior to the 6 months of irregular poop I fed her Hills ZD.

From your text it appears your dog has a food related allergy that is controlled by this homemade diet. The amount of fatty acids (fish oil and olive oil) for your pet can be confusing to calculate. We use hemp oil as our source of fatty acid supplementation. For a 60 pound dog one teaspoon is adequate. Her nutritional needs would be easily met with the fish and chicken and a teaspoon of olive oil daily. The concern for overdosing is a potential for diarrhea! In addition, I would suggest a good multivitamin and mineral supplement. Pet Tabs is a good brand, but there are certainly others. When cooking for our pets, we can unintentionally not provide trace vitamins and minerals.
