Elderly dog’s nightly restlessness
My 16 year old German Shepherd mixed dog is very restless at night. She has DM, but is able to still get around, although she does have trouble getting up on her own at times. I’m up with her several times during the night and she won’t settle down sometimes until after 5 a.m. (it’s 2:00 a.m. and she is pacing and stumbling around.) I have tried giving her benadryl, but it doesn’t seem to work. Two questions – what’s going on and what can I do for her so that we can both sleep at night? Thank you!

It is likely she is suffering from canine cognitive dysfunction, commonly known as senility. There is a drug, Anipryl, that has shown some promise in controlling this problem. Ask your regular veterinarian if this may be right for your dog.
