I have a question about… dog pooping in house

We have a 6 1/2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog who has been having accidents (solid stools, not loose) in the house for the last 8 months. The accidents happen between 1 – 5 times a day and she doesn’t seem to be aware that she’s having a bowel movement. It can happen when she’s walking, laying down, and even sleeping. Other than this, she acts normally. We had x-rays done a few months ago and the vet wasn’t able to find anything. We don’t know what to do. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

This definitely sounds like a neural problem in the lower back which has led to fecal incontinence. The use of a MRI of the spine or a contrast dye study of the spine may help to locate the lesion, to determine if surgery would be beneficial. Short of a surgical solution, prednisone may be able to treat the inflammation in the spine to allow proper nerve conduction.
