Dalmatian coughing like she has “croup”
I have a 7-8 year old Dalmatian that I rescued from a shelter. She was adopted by another couple prior to my adopting her and was returned to the shelter because she kept vomiting. Now, over a year later after adopting her, and about $1000.00 in vet bills, I am no closer to finding out WHAT is causing these symptoms: coughing like she has “croup”; she begins to gag like she’s about the vomit and most of the time she stops and sometimes she actually vomits. I talked with my vets office today and excoriated them for not giving me a diagnosis for all the money I have paid them. They are a top veterinarian practice in our area, but have not adequately answered the WHAT is causing this question. I was most recently told maybe i would have to take her to see a “specialist”, costing me a ton of more money.
My question is” have you ever encountered this is any of the dogs at DELTA, and if so, were you able to ascertain the cause, and if so, how did you get he/she back into good health?
The vet took an xray of her entire torso including her abdominal area, did entire blood workup and “organ functions” (for lack of proper terminology). They performed a transtracheal wash and put her on Cipro.
She eats Fromm Family dog dry food and Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover soft food. I am beside myself wanting an explanation for what ails her. She has had this for way over a year, at least. I hope you can help.

I feel your frustration! Unfortunately, additional tests will have too be run to determine your dog’s problem. Motility studies of the esophagus and endoscope of the stomach would be what I recommend next. I would suspect either a problem like megaesophagus or an outflow problem from the stomach, such as a hypertrophic pyloric sphincter. Most cases like this are controlled at best as opposed to cured.
Thank you doctor Gaylord. This gives me another perspective and another area to explore with “Dolly”. I appreciate your reply.
We also have a dalmation ‘rescue’ (not from a rescue league, just from ‘the street’…..never found owner, but he must have been ‘on the road for a long time’) Anyway that was 10 yrs ago; our vet averaged his age to be about 1 yr and 1/2 at that time. He’s always been in very good shape, but recently also started the ‘coupe’ type cough with ‘almost vomiting’, The vet checked his heart and gave him a good ‘going over’. He thought it may be some type of alergy….but I don’t think so. He seems to pant more and breathe fast even when occasionally when he’s asleep I feel like its some type of ‘respitory’ condition (Having asthma myself, I can somewhat ‘relate’.) We take very good care of our pets, but do not have the money to do a lot of expensive test that may show nothing…..or show somethine that cannot be remedied.
Does anyone know of medication that could help with the coughing? He’s eating well and does not appear to be in any other type of distress. Thanks for ‘listening’
Our dog, Dolly, just had a vet visit 2 days ago and we were told that the coughing and ‘gagging-wanting to throw up’ were due the the fact that in his estimation she has congestive heart failure as she is about 12-13 years old. She also has problems with severe arthritis and we were told (by the vet) to give her 1500mg of glucosamine-chondroitin daily.
Now I’m not entirely convinced that glucosamine-chondroitin works, but if enough empirical evidence comes my way then I certainly will give it a try.
If anyone has had any experience with glucosamine-chondroitin or any other joint supplement that worked for them, please reply to this message. I’ll be watching. Thank you!
