I have a question about… Chemodectoma

Aloha Dr. Brown!
I have a beautiful “6” year old Mini Schnauzer, “U`ilani”, that was diagnosed with Chemodectoma. I have been to my Vet here in Vegas who did x-rays as well as an ultrasound. I also went do another Vet recommended to me by my groomer for a second opinion and she also came up with the same diagnose.
They found that she has a tumor that is pushing against her esophagus/trachea causing her to breath faster, she coughs and when she drinks water or eats hard food she dry heaves and at times vomits a bit. I have changed her to soft can food which of course she likes and has been eating thankfully.
My question to you is this; is there anything I can do to help her myself, I mean is there something I can give her to help shrink the tumor? Both doctors suggested I take her to an Oncologist for surgery and or chemo therapy. They did say that they don’t know if she would even survive the surgery or if they would even be able to get it all.
I have a close friend that I work with and her dog had cancer and she went through the chemo and tried everything so I know what it cost her. To be honest as much as I want to do everything medically necessary that she needs, I would not be able to afford it. My good friend has a husband that is a VP of a company and could. Please understand all that I am asking is if you know of anyway I could do something myself, something that I could afford as far as a medication. When she coughs or dry heaves it seems like she has a lot of mucus that she’s trying to cough out. Like when you have a chest cold and you have a lot of mucus in your chest or throat you can get a decongestant to clear it up. Is there something like this for animals? Or am I thinking way out of the box, it just seems if she could get rid of the mucus it would help?
Please understand all I’m asking for is your knowledge in how I can help my best friend out. These past few years have been the hardest for me and it may sound crazy, but my dog, my friend U`ilani (Beauty from Heaven) helped me through it and is still.
I thank you for your time and consideration, when I saw you on TV today I had to take a chance and email you!
Mahalo!

Certainly symptomatic treatment may help with the congestion. Benadry that can be purchased over the counter at a dose of 1 mg./lb. up to three times daily may help. All of our cancer patients are on tumeric at 2000 mg. twice daily and a teaspoon of hemp oil daily. Prednisone from your veterinarian may shrink the tumor some at little cost. Finally, consider seeking out assistance from an association in your area that helps defer cost on an as needed basis.
