I have a question about…Cat with diarrea

Hello, my ten year old long hair tabby has diarrhea at least once or twice a week and she goes outside the box when she has it. She also has hairballs at least once a week.
The vet gave her antibiotics but that didn’t help.

I feed her Innova dry food senior and a little wet food in the morning, usually a turkey based wet food like Wellness. I’ve also been giving her boiled chicken breast with brown rice mixed with wet food. Nothing seems to work. This has been happening for a few months now. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Donna Grillo

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

There are a number of recommendations for this cat. First, have the stool tested for parasites; preferably including ova, clostridia, cryptosporidium, and giardia. Treat accordingly if found to be positive. Have radiographs and a blood panel to rule out metabolic problems. Treat the hairball problem with laxatone, or a product like it, on a consistent and regular basis. Change the food to a single unique protein source; such as rabbit or venison, and a unique carbohydrate source; such as potato. Have her tested for pancreatic insufficiency and supplement if necessary. Consider the use of probiotics to aid in digestion. We also use a solution from Kam products called KLPP to aid in digestion.
