I have a question about cat diet
My daughters 14 yr old cat just passed away. The vet said she had large stones in her (liver) or another organ, I don’t remember… After she passed some people told her that feedin a cat dry food all of her life causes stones. Is this true?? Should you mix canned and dry food?? She was also told that feeding a total dry food diet to a male cat that has been neutered is worse. Please help, since there are 2 more cats in the family…

What you are referring to is old information that foods higher in ash lead to stones in the urinary tract. We have learned this is simplistic, and stones are actually a function of urine acidity, urinary tract infections, and mineral content. A food’s total nutritional content is what is important. Also providing plenty of fresh water aids in proper urinary health. Most premium brands of cat food now address these issues.
