When an animal loses a front leg, there will be extra stress on the rear leg joints. It is likely arthritis will develop in the lower back and the hips. Defining the extent of the problem with radiographs is helpful, so get some radiographs done by your veterinarian. In addition to the joint enhancer supplement, additional medication will be required. The use of a NSAID, such as rimadyl or deramax will reduce the inflammation and pain. An injectable drug that helps to build joint cartilage, Adequan or Ichon, will also help. As the condition progresses a cortisone product, like prednisone, will probably become necessary. In addition we use hemp oil as a omega 3 and 6 fatty acid supplement. I assume the joint enhancer is a form of glucosamine and chondroitiin supplement. Acupuncture can also help these dogs manage their discomfort.
