I have a question about…anal glands

I have a cockalier. he is 3 1/2 years old. he has anal glands. we have to have them done once a month. everytime we go the vet says they were filled. he seems alright for a few days and then starts scouting around. is there anyting we can do to prevent them from coming so frequently? he is so uncomfortable from them. also, he is constantly licking his butt and tail. he has bald spots from the licking. is there anything we can do to prevent him from doing that? thanks for your advice we greatly appreciate it.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

Anal sacs are not essential and may be removed if causing constant problems. I would explore other causes of rectal itching prior to surgery. Food allergies and atopy (inhalant allergic dermatitis) can both cause rectal itching. If the anal sacs are actually chronically infected a surgery to remove would be your best option. If there is an allergy causing the itching you will be disappointed with the outcome of surgery.
