I have a question about…

I took one of my cats (I have 5) to the vet a couple weeks ago and she was successfully treated for a bladder infection. However, the vet didn’t give me an answer about my other question: My cat will have “sneezing fits” every so often. She begins with clear mucus for a couple days, after which the fits intensify, she will barely eat, and she becomes clingy for a couple days. Once she sneezes out a string of green mucus (it looks like tinsel hanging on her whiskers), she will begin eating more and becomes more like herself. The whole process lasts about a week and occurs every 3-4 weeks. She is probably 10-11 years old, is also prone to urinary tract infections, and is on a special UT diet with Cosequin supplements. I haven’t found this problem described in any of my cat medical books either. Can you help me? Thanks so much!

This sounds like a low grade, chronic sinus infection. I think it would be helpful to have the nasal secretion cultured during one of these episodes for appropriate antibiotic treatment. I also find vitamin A supplementation helpful in these circumstances. Check with your regular veterinarian for a dose appropriate to her size.

Thank you so much for your response! I contacted my vet, who encouraged me to bring my cat in for a nasal culture when I notice the green mucus is being secreted. He also asked that I bring in a copy of our correspondence. I will let you know when the culture has been performed and what its results are.

By the way, I thoroughly enjoy your “Ask the Vet shows on Pets.TV! I am so impressed by your gentleness toward the animals combined with your congeniality toward the questioners. If only all vets were like you!
