12 year old Lab – What vitamin or medication would help his walking

My Lab, Zeus, is 12 years old. He is walking slower now and sometimes has a hard time climbing stairs. He still enjoys going for walks and still takes laps in our pool. What vitamin or medication would help his walking?

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

It is not unusual for larger breeds to develop arthritis of the hips and lower spine as they get older. At the sanctuary we use glucosamine/ chondroitin and hemp oil supplementation. In addition we will use a NSAID, such as rimadyl or deramax. However, we do not use rimadyl on labs, as they can have a rare but fatal reaction. We will commonly do ultrasound therapy on the joints involved. As the condition progresses we add acupuncture.
