I have a question about…

My mixed breed dog will be 16 years old soon. For approx. 3 months he’s been pooping in the house during the night or early a.m. He’s been on the same diet for approx. a decade now, but I’ve tried feeding him more in the a.m., less in the p.m., hoping this may change this undesirable pooping habit … no luck.
Do you think it may be just his age causing this suddenly. Would a change in diet or times he’s fed help?
He seems healthy otherwise and poops outside when being walked.
He’s “my baby” and I hate the thought of having him put to sleep because of this problem; as yet I haven’t discussed it with his vet. Any advice you can offer will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

This is an age related phenomenon that is not uncommon. It can be a symptom of cognitive dysfunction, i.e. senility. There is a drug, anipryl, which has been shown to aid in the treatment of cognitive dysfunction. This may be worth a try in your dog’s case. However, it can also be a relation to bowel habits changing as they get older. If the stool character has changed to diarrhea or constipation there can be some medical treatments that may help. Consult your regular veterinarian to discuss your options.
