2) Dragging his bottom on the carpet is not necessarily a sign of the urinary tract problem or constipation. The most common cause of dragging the bottom on the carpet is rectal irritation. Impacted anal sacs, residual scent glands on each side of the anus, is a common cause of rectal irritation. To empty these sacs pressure needs to be applied to each side of the anus at the same time to express the fluid. A veterinarian or a competent groomer can show you how to do this. Another cause of rectal irritation can be intestinal parasites. Having the stool checked at a veterinarian’s office can rule out this problem. If the cat is constipated there are a number of products that can alleviate the problem; such as laxatone, petlax, and vetasyl. If the cat has had a urinary tract issue these can be used with its special diet.
