I have a question about…
My 11 yr old terrier/shepard mix has torn a ligament in his left rear knee and the doctor wants to operate. This happened on July 21st and he is trying a little to put weight on it but mostly holds it up. I don’t know if he will make it through the surgery or ever really recover so I don’t know what to do. He has had blood work and seems to be in pretty good health but he won’t stay that way if he can’t go on walks and he will surely gain weight without walks. I need to know if there is any chance that he will ever walk on the leg full time without surgery? Thank you for you time and opinion.

From your description this sounds like an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The surgery for this injury has a high rate of success. If your dog is as healthy as you describe, I would recommend you proceed with the surgery. Without surgery, you could expect some improvement and use of the limb over time. However, the leg would always cause him trouble.
