I have a question about…

My cat is peeing outside the box, on carpets and woodfloors throughout the house. She is 16yrs old. It started when we moved into this house 8 months ago. she has been diagnosed with begining renal failure. She has had repeated urinary infections. But when on antibotics her behavior does not change. the vet thinks maybe bladder cancer, but I can not afford that testing. I have noticed that she has very small red slivers that come out of her body. What does this mean? I do not want her to be suffering. I am at a loss as what to do.

  • Dr. Gaylord Brown:

The renal failure may increase urinary frequency, but is unlikely to cause the inappropriate urinary behavior. She is suffering from anxiety, most like associated with the move to the new house. The use of Feline appeasement Pheromones and anti-anxiety medications may prove beneficial. In some cats the use of the hormone, progesterone has proven beneficial.
