I have a question about…

bringing a new dog or puppy into my home. I have an 18 year old cat and she is scared of everything. She acts almost feral, though she is not. She won’t go near people except me and this includes my 2 kids who grew up with her! They are in their 20s now! They never really got to bond with her. Funny–she loved my dog so much-they bonded so well, but she was just a kitten when she came home. We have taken care of a friend’s dog and she ran away for the 2 weeks we dog sat. She is too old to have such stress, but I really miss having a dog in the house, plus I want to give a shelter dog a home. I know they can be introduced eventually, but I fear it will be too much work and stress for me. Now I am stressed worrying about her if I get a dog. Do you have any suggestions about a new dog? Should it be a puppy or not? Help! Thanks so much.

You have had a preview of how she will be behave with your pet sitting experience. You may be able to mitigate this some with anti-anxiety medication and Feline Appeasement Pheromones, but it will take a lot of time to get her to tolerate a new dog; much less accept one. You may be better served to wait until her passing and get a new pair afterwards.
