How do you open a dogs mouth while it’s awake?
My dog has some food lodged in the roof of its mouth. She is trying to get it out herself but cannot. She won’t let me open her mouth to help her. Is there a trick to doing this? She is a Jack Russell.

This site is not for emergencies. This dog needs to go to a veterinarian immediately. Unfortunately, many animals in this situation are too frightened to allow a person to help them without being sedated. I can only hope this dog did not have to wait until I answered this question to get help.
