Fasting for Phenobarabitol

I have been giving my 11 yr old dog phenobarb for 9 yrs. He has been seizure free all this time. I have a new Vet and she wanted him fasted for his test. I never had to do this before. Just not meds for 12 hrs prior. I did so, but she had problems getting blood, it took 3 jabs before she got some and now she wants to do it again. Is this normal? He got so tramatized with all the jabbing and she would not give me a script for his meds.

A dog that has been on medication for 9 years should not be denied a prescription. Fasting may have been requested to test fasting blood sugar, if a panel was run instead of just phenobarbital levels. This would be prudent to test for potential liver problems from long term drug use. The skill of drawing blood can vary from vet to vet. Perhaps you would feel more comfortable with a different veterinarian.

Hi Dr. Brown. I just wanted to thank you for getting back to me on Oct. 11th. It is now Nov 3rd and my dog that I was questioning you about has just died today. I don’t know what happened to him. He was fine when I took him back for his blood to be drawn again. I got his meds and a week later, he was walking a little funny, I thought it was arthritis because of his age, I had him on glacosmine. Every couple of days he would be lathargic and then o.k. Then on the 28th he started panting heavy, then he would be o.k. and today it just died in the house. I just wanted to tell you. I don’t know what happened. He was never sick before. Thank you for listening.
